Read this a year or so back while on holiday and although it wasn't a gripping read, there were parts that did make me laugh.

A story about a woman who one days wakes up and see's the light and declares that she will no longer be nurse maid to her uncaring, 'out to get what they can for themselves' family. Along the journey she encounters a hippy for a new house resident while her husband trys to find himself, an affair which satisfies one part of her yet leaves her numb the other, her work which she feels utterly helpless at but is determined to be doing the right thing while inside she is crumbling up and screams, "no more! no more!"

The husband I think is the best character of the lot simply because he is such a pathetic specimen that one simply can't believe there is indeed such a man alive. All you want to do is throttle him but of course you can't since it's only words to throttle on the page.

I heard great things about Nick Hornby but I'd have to say this is his first book I've read and I feel a little let down by all his hype. That's really annoying when you read one of the authors 'not so good books' but yet your not inclined to pick up another and give it ago since there's always something else sitting there in the wings wanting for the cover to be turned over.

Didn't enjoy this one as much as the last Nick Hornby book I read - it felt like he couldn't quite make up his mind whether it was supposed to be funny or not. And I had absolutely no sympathy for the main character, who spent half the book being smugly self-righteous, and didn't seem nearly intelligent enough to be a doctor.

But it did have a few amusing moments, and probably would have been an enjoyable read if my expectations had been lower. Maybe someone reading it who'd never read any Nick Hornby before and hadn't heard any of the hype surrounding him would think it was really good...
