Preparing my trip to Canada I plundered the free book shelf at the local supermarket for books to release on the way.
"Caught" this book at our Harbord House meetup today, with special guest, Xarodoc from Germany. It was fun to see you again, Xarodoc, and one of our best meetups ever, plus, I love Anita Shreve's books! I have read six of her novels, but not this one. (And don't get me started on….."Time Traveller's Wife"…LOL).
'Enjoyed this book. I think of Shreve as a romance writer, but the romances are very modern, with many twists and turns, and she writes well. What I mean is, the language is sophisticated, unlike a Harlequin book! This novel is like a collection of sensations combined with a narrative. I liked it almost as much as "Fortune's Rocks" and "The Pilot's Wife" - my favourited Shreve books so far. Thanks, Xarodoc - for lugging it over the ocean!
Picked this up a week ago at our Harbord House BC Meetup. Didn't think I had read any Anita Shreve, but am now thinking that I read The Pilot's Wife about a dozen or more years ago. Took this home on high recommendation from trusted fellow book-lovers.
I read this while on vacation in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. I enjoyed reading the scenes that take place in the ocean on the same days that I was jumping the waves and feeling the under-tow. This was a great book to read while on vacation - very light yet very engaging. I did really like Sydney. I thought most of the ending was predictable, but I did cry at one point, and laughed out loud a few times. Thanks Xarodoc for bringing it over to Canada. My sister-in-law will read it next. She is staying down here in MX for another three weeks and will leave it for the owners of the condo we are staying in.
