This book really is just a bit of fun. Although it does allow us to examine how we feel about people in later life. Alan Karlsson is one hundred years old, in fact the book starts on Allans' one hundredth birthday. There is a party planned in the residential home where Allan lives. However he can't be arsed with that and decides to climb out of the window of his ground floor room. During his escape he manages to pick up a large amount of money, that belongs to the mob and meet a real rag tag bunch of people as he travels around Sweden (the Country in which the story is set). As the story develops we find that Allan really has packed a lot into his hundred years. Indeed we find that Allan has played key roles in some of the most momentous events of the twentieth century.
It would be unfair of me to describe this book as being Forrest Gump set in Sweden, however that does give you a flavour of what this book is like. So if you are looking for a book that is not too taxing but at the same time is a real page turner, this is the book for you. There are some really funny bits in this book and that alone makes it worth reading as it will put a smile on your face. I so want to be like Allan if I reach one hundred years of age.
