Kate Shackleton (you wonder if she was any relation to those other Shackletons) is the widow of a surgeon who disappeared in April 1918 during military action (love that euphemism) in France. She has done all the proper things to move on with her life but she's never really accepted the fact of her surgeon husband's death. A friend is about to get married and would really like to know what happened to her father before that day. Kate is very sympathetic, of course, but what can she do when the police were unable to find anything?
The search for the missing man travels through the Bradford area of Yorkshire and involves the woolen mills of the area and the various political and other currents drifting through the area in the early 1920s.
There was a fair amount of research involved in this novel and I would certainly be glad to read another with this character.
