When Alf Jarrett spots the hitchhiker waiting on the motorway sliproad, he thinks his prayers have been answered. William Banks is a personable young man of twenty, just leaving home for the first time - perfect for what Alf has in mind.
And when William is offered a free night's lodging and the chance to repay Alf for the lift, he accepts eagerly. After all, it sounds simple enough - drop off a package at a block of flats and post the spare key through the letterbox.
What William doesn't realise is that he is the intended victim in a sinister plan of arson and murder.
From back cover.

Picked up at a charity shop.

I picked this up from the Guildford meet today with my Mum in mind. Saying that, I did enjoy the Cadfael books by the same author so might try this myself too.

Just got this from kleptokitty - my first ever bookcrossing book! I love the Cadfael novels be Ellis Peters so hopefully this will be great, too! Looking forward to reading it soon...

I personally prefer the "Brother Cadfael" set of whodunnits by this author - but that's probably due to my infatuation with all things medieval... Still, this book has the same style, subtle humour and immediately captivating beginning which are typical for Ellis Peters. It is set in a contemporary English surround (at time of writing - first published 1976) which was quite fun to remember (having been my teen years...) and the plot is good enough to make you want to read it from cover to cover in a single sitting - it's only 250 pages. There are several bodies appearing in the story but nothing gruesome at all, and if you are a read-along-sleuth you should be able to anticipate the answers to most questions as they are coming along. Not deep, not thrilling but well worth a read for something enjoyable.

I picked up this book at the BookCrossing meeting in Reading on 18 November 2004. I will add it to my "to be read" pile. This is a new author for me. I look forward to reading it and will release it when I have done so.

Received back after a short journey, and I'll get round to reading it myself eventually!

A fairly light and easy to read mystery, with not quite as much gore or action as my normal fare. Enjoyable, but I don't think it quite matches the Cadfael stories.

Picked up at the BOSH meet-up at the Great Expectations last week.

Initially spotted by ChelseaGirl, but then she gave it to me as she didn't want to take more books away from the meeting than she had brought! I'd had my eye on it anyway, so was quite pleased to catch it...

A fun read - although I'd question whether it's a classic whodunnit since it's made pretty clear who did it... still enjoyable enough for the reader to guess the next twist in the story from some reasonably obvious hints and clues along the way.

Chelseagirl's mount tbr is still too big to pass this on to her, so off into the wild it goes!
