Pretty good chick lit book made more interesting from the point of view that the author used to be the personal assistant to Anna Wintour, editor of "Vogue". You do spend half the novel going ... "... hmmm, I wonder if Anna made Lauren do that ..."

"A delightfully dishy novel about the all-time most impossible boss in the history of impossible bosses.
Andrea Sachs, a small-town girl fresh out of college, lands the job “a million girls would die for.” Hired as the assistant to Miranda Priestly, the high-profile, fabulously successful editor of Runway magazine, Andrea finds herself in an office that shouts Prada! Armani! Versace! at every turn, a world populated by impossibly thin, heart-wrenchingly stylish women and beautiful men clad in fine-ribbed turtlenecks and tight leather pants that show off their lifelong dedication to the gym. With breathtaking ease, Miranda can turn each and every one of these hip sophisticates into a scared, whimpering child.
THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA gives a rich and hilarious new meaning to complaints about “The Boss from Hell.” Narrated in Andrea’s smart, refreshingly disarming voice, it traces a deep, dark, devilish view of life at the top only hinted at in gossip columns and over Cosmopolitans at the trendiest cocktail parties. From sending the latest, not-yet-in-stores Harry Potter to Miranda’s children in Paris by private jet, to locating an unnamed antique store where Miranda had at some point admired a vintage dresser, to serving lattes to Miranda at precisely the piping hot temperature she prefers, Andrea is sorely tested each and every day—and often late into the night with orders barked over the phone. She puts up with it all by keeping her eyes on the prize: a recommendation from Miranda that will get Andrea a top job at any magazine of her choosing. As things escalate from the merely unacceptable to the downright outrageous, however, Andrea begins to realize that the job a million girls would die for may just kill her. And even if she survives, she has to decide whether or not the job is worth the price of her soul."

what a fun, fast read! i had my doubts on the first page, as the author doesn't really reveal her heroine until chapter 2, but after that it was breezy mindless fun, and more enjoyable than i expected.
sending off to labmomnm.

Scary-o-rama, so far. I'm already on Ch. 4 and appreciating my job more and more!
3/25/04 update - finished this last night. I think it should be listed under "mythology" - no way that Christian guy exists in real life! But, if anyone runs into his real-life counterpart, please FedEx to moiself - I'll be more than happy to pay all shipping charges!
The Wintour connection is interesting - when I get some free time, I'm going to Google the crap out of her and see how many parallels exist between her & Miranda/Satan. The other publishing woman who came to mind as I read this is Tina Brown. I remember when news broke that she was going to "The New Yorker" - many considered it to be a sure sign of the apocalypse! She has quite the rep.
Mailed 3/27/04 to casseytara.

Received today! Can't wait to start reading! I'm actually in the middle of four other books right now, but I may start this one tonight anyway! The girls have a dress rehearsal for a dance competition, and I'll have some time to kill while waiting for them!
I truly enjoyed this book! I was glued to the pages, waiting to find out what horrible incredible thing Miranda would come up with next! My own boss, well, I reccomended this book to a co-worker and told her Miranda was Virginia times 100. If our boss had Miranda's money and power and influence, I can easily imagine her becoming just like Miranda! As it is, this book makes me grateful to have her!
I'm dropping it in the mailbox tonight so it'll be winging it's way to WarEagle78 tomorrow! And thanks so much for sharing GlasgowGal! I'll have to look up the author now and see what other books she's written so I can start looking for them!

received in mail today. Looks great! Thanks for starting this ring, GlasgowGal and thanks caseytara for sending it on.
A very entertaining and very readable chick-lit about Andrea, just out of college, and her attempt to balance the demands of the "job from hell" and her friends, family and real life. The fun of the book come from the insider peek into her job, assistant to the editor of a fashion magazine. This is a must-read for anyone who likes this genre.
On its way to Missouri, probably later today.

Off in mail today. Thanks again!
Thanks! Got this in the mail today. I do have a few rings in front of it.
Finally finished this book over the weekend! I had recently read 3 Shopaholic books in a ring, so thought that I could not look at another chick lit book. However, I really enjoyed this book. It was fun to see what Miranda would come up with next! Thanks for sending this around, I will send this book on its way soon. Thanks
got this today; will get to it in the next few days as I am in the middle of another ring right now. Thanks for the opportunity to read this one!
This book kept me up last night so I could finish it.
I wish now I would have broken my steadfast rule of not reading journal entries which may contain spoilers before reading the book. I think it would have put a slant on everything if I'd have known the author may have been writing from personal experience (especially as Andrea found that niche at the end as well).
Just waiting for the address of the next reader and then I'll send it on it's way!
Thanks for sharing, glasgowgal

mailed today to princessaurora.
I received this on Wed. I'll be starting as soon as I finish the other book I'm reading right now.
Mailed to Yourotherleft today.
Once I got started reading this, I had to keep reading in the hopes that Andrea would have her revenge against Miranda. I was very happy at the way this ended.

This came in the mail yesterday. I'll read it and pass it on as soon as I can. Thanks!
I started reading this, only to find that it really isn't my "cup of tea." kab113 asked to be skipped, so I mailed it off to Twinmaker today. Thanks to GlasgowGal for at least giving me the chance to try it!

Finally finished this! Sorry for the hold up everyone. I started off liking this but it dragged on too long with the downtrodden part. I would like to have seen Miranda get more of a come-uppance than she did.
I will contact the next on the list.

Unfortunately I think this bookring has now died as it has not been heard of in over 18 months. What a shame.
I posted this on to Iran but who knows what the post is like there. I sent it airmail and can only hope that it made it's destination.
