Paul’s Book #9725
ONE CRAZY SUMMER is a fictional account of the experiences of three young girls who travel to Oakland, California in 1968. Oakland was a hotbed of political unrest and a gathering place for many Black Panthers.
As I read this sad, shocking story, I thought about what I was doing that summer. I was eighteen and had just graduated from high school. A friend and I were spending the summer together in Jackson, Wyoming. We had jobs there, and were enjoying the freedom of being on our own and having cash to spend as we wished. I spent the summer of 1968 chatting about boyfriends, plans for our upcoming college year, cute clothes, and new hair styles. Politics, demonstrations, civil rights, etc. never ever entered our minds. In retrospect, I am VERY glad that I was a carefree, happy teen who lived with optimistic hope for my future. I was untouched by the tragedies of 1968. For me, ignorance was bliss!
This book presents many interesting facts that are woven together well by a touching story line. It has received many literature recognition awards.
I'm going to return ONE CRAZY SUMMER to Paul's Books. Thanks for sharing!
