Mary Chesnut's Civil War. Edited by C. Vann Woodward
2 journalers for this copy...
Bought in 1994 from the BOMC, NY. A few years later, on a trip to the Old South, I took this pic of an antebellum home in Milledgeville, GA in March 2001.
Mary Boykin Chesnut belonged to the Confederate high society and states that she had the luck "always to stumble upon the real show". Thus, this book is a very important and thorough piece of history-in-the-making, valuable not just for (Civil) War buffs and fans of Americana, but for everybody interested in the human story.
The first entry was written on February 18, 1861, the last is dated July 26, 1865. Almost fifty pages of index (people and places) make the tome accessible.

Controlled release during tonight's meetup.
To my great pleasure I received it during today’s meetup from Litrajunkie.
The book will find it's new home now next to four volumes of Shelby Foote, McPherson's "Battle Cry of Freedom" and many others. Hopefully it will not take 20 years until the next entry is made here.
