This has arrived. Haven't caught up on my bookring backlog yet but this looks a quick read.
After reading Barbara Pym's first 2 books, I didn't think I would read any more - they seemed to be for a "lady of a certain age". However the third book I read was a great improvement and this was even better. Crampton Hodnet is one of her later books so I think it must be an indication of how her writing developed. I found this much more humourous and confirmation of how pathetic men are - and women sometimes. I'm glad I raced through this because of my bookring backlog and now I'm very curious to hear the speaker from the Barbara Pym Appreciation Society at the Oxford Convention next year.
On it's way in the bookring.
Arrived safe and sound. Thank you.
If not the holiday season that got in the way and left me with no time for reading at all, I would have finished the book sooner as it was a quick and easy read.
It was my first, but hopefully not the last, encounter with the author and I enjoyed it to the full - the writing was intelligent and witty and the small town society very English indeed. It will be interesting to learn more about Barbara Pym at the Convention next year.

Posted to the next person on the list. Enjoy!

Arrived safely today. Thank you.
I have not read any Barbara Pym, mainly as it was an author my mother enjoyed, and I had an image of them being for older women. Now I am older than my Mum was when she was reading books like these (though I don't remember seeing this particular one) so it's time to ignore my prejudices, and also so that I am prepared for the Convention.

A real comedy of manners set in 1930s Oxford and very snobbish middle class society. Much gossip and keeping up of appearances. I loved the characters of Miss Morrow and Miss Doggett and expect they exist still in North Oxford, at least. An amusing read. I shall be interested and at least a little prepared for a speaker from The Barbara Pym Society at the Bookcrossing Convention.
Picked up from the mailbox today - thanks candy-is-dandy!
I was really surprised how much I enjoyed reading this book. Mostly subtle, ironic and a lot of deadpan humour on Miss Morrow's side - as to me the perfect book for a chilly sunday afternoon at a cosy place.
Very nice that the book cover does exactly show the first scene :-) (very often, there's not the least connection between cover and content).

Thank you OldVulture for the return of this book and for the Lindor....I'm a sucker for Lindor.
Looking forward to meeting you at the Convention.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Released at the Oxford Convention.
Picked up from the book table.
Amusing book. I could never have been a paid companion; I would never have been able to keep my mouth shut. For some reason Miss Doggett made me think of one of my old PE teachers.

Picked it up at the Convention book buffet. I didn't hear the Pym society speaker in Oxford, but I remembered the lovely book covers.
