The movie for this book comes out next month (September 2014): Tomi Nakaji is growing up in Honolulu in 1941. He hangs out with his friends, plays baseball, and tries to cope with his family: mostly he's just a regular kid. Then Japan attacks the United States, and Tomi's life will never be the same.

My parents are a few years younger than Tomi and went to the high school he attends; one of my great-grandfathers was, like Tomi's father, held prisoner after Pearl Harbor day. Relatives on both sides of my family had their lives radically changed by December 7, 1941. I'm too young to actually remember any of the events that take place in this story, but I don't want to forget about them either.
