44 Scotland Street is the story of the occupants of said building and the small happenings in their lives. There's Pat (who, for some inexplicable, and oft mentioned reason, is on her second gap year); her flatmate Bruce and his spicy hair; five year old Bertie and his over the top parents (particularly, Irene, his mother); and Domenica, an older lady who seems to know everything. Their stories cross over each other, without ever delving too deep, and friendships are formed between Pat, the newest occupant, and the other residents.

From reading the preface, we learn that the book was written as a series of installments for a newspaper, and that these installments were published before the story was finished, meaning that there was no way of going back and changing elements as they were already in the public domain. It also means that while there's a lot that happens in the story, nothing ever really seems to happen properly. The surface is not scratched, and the characters lack any real depth.

The characters are interesting enough, though somewhat predictable, and the story held my attention without ever actually making me think. Nothing really momentous happened, and I actually kind of enjoyed the lack of drama and easy reading. Because that is really what it is, easy reading.

I'll probably read one of the others in the series I have on my shelf (the World According to Bertie), because he actually had a bit of ooomph to him (LA MACFADZEAN E UNA VACCA!), and because the reading is sooooo easy, there's no reason not to.
