I went to Maine this summer so when I was back at work, I wanted to read something that would make me relive that rural sea life and picked this book. (I know, I know, wrong coast!)

It did not disappoint. It’s a wonderful read, beautifully written, with complex characters who are well captured by the author. The everyday social exchanges are so real. I didn’t realize that this book really is about racism. It was so fascinating reading about the treatment of the Japanese residents of San Piedro, which obviously happened all over the place.

As a European it was really interesting to read about the war and its aftermath from a US perspective. We don’t really get a lot of that here.

The only objection I have to this book is the ending. What is up with it? It was just not very satisfying after that entire journey through multiple lives and over decades of interactions. The beautiful writing makes the read worth it, though, no doubt!

Thanks for sharing this book! I’ll see if my husband wants to read it, or I’ll just pass it on somehow.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

Left this in the book swapping shelf. Books don’t seem to stay there for very long, so there’s a fair bit of swapping going on there I think.

Hopefully this book will find a reader who enjoys it. I’ve seen other English language books in the bookshelf so there are some who come there who may be interested.

If you pick it up, please write us a note to tell us it’s with you. You can stay anonymous and not register to do so! But it’s a lot of fun to follow the book on its journey, which you can do if you register with your email.
