I took a while to get into the book, the more I got to know the character Stoner, the more I became engrossed in the story. Bitter-sweet.

What a surprise that this was waiting for me at the post office on Friday! I can't believe it actually got here! The package is a little beat up but I think everything is there - thank-you so much for sending it!

As often happens to me, I read a few pages shortly after getting this book in the mail, it didn't grip me, so I put it down. This month I took a short trip to Burma (Myanmar), and this was one of the books I took with me. I opted out of the introduction when I realized it was going to tell me the whole story blow-by-blow (why do they like to do that?) and started again from the beginning. It's fascinatingly well written; I mean, it should be boring, but it isn't. The author sums up Stoner's life on the first page and then proceeds, slowly but surely, to break down our assumptions of what we've just been told. Excellent mastery of the craft of writing--the more you get into it, the more you find yourself eagerly turning the pages even without the benefit of a "plot" so to speak.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

I've begun visiting this friendly little coffee shop regularly; I left this book there yesterday, along with another, on the shelf under one of the tables, telling the staff that it was free for anyone to take. There was an other book on a shelf, too - maybe this will encourage a book exchange corner here? Delightful place, with friendly staff, good coffee and a tasty BLT!
