From the back cover:
Christmas is coming. Seven-year-old Billy and his eccentric elderly cousin set out on a crisp day in November to reenact their holiday ritual of baking fruitcake. From poaching pecans to counting precious pennies, Buddy and his cousin manage to turn a traditional holiday practice into a declaration of true friendship and love.

Later: Oh, this was a delightful story, though with a sad ending. It's largely autobiographical, I guess. A simple Christmas with a dear friend - what more could one ask for? The illustrations in this edition are wonderful as well.
