Would you tell your 18-yr old dropout daughter it might be a good idea for her to sail around the world by herself? Particularly since she really didn't have much experience sailing!
Tania's father did just that, and thankfully, she survived to write the story.
I really enjoyed this book and even more enjoyed watching her mature and reach her goal.

5/12/04 - I'm about halfway through this and I'm ready to throttle her father! What a jackass! I'm hoping he'll do something to redeem himself by the end of the book.......
5/13/04 - Nope, still pretty much a jackass. I admire Tania for what she did, and for saying, "Having done it, I realized now how much more is possible. But I could never have known had I not tried." And credit does go to her father for pushing her to do this. BUT she was sent off to sea unprepared, and I think was extremely lucky to have run into some helpful people along the way who taught her what she needed to know and helped her out (the sailing community is like that, but that was the only thing that got her through this adventure). I've known kids who grew up around boats and I wouldn't have a problem with them going off on such a journey, but she hadn't had much sailing experience and didn't grow up in one of those "boaty" families. Yes, this did make her grow up, but....you notice that she's always attached to some father figure? Her own dad, then Luc, then Olivier? I'm interested to hear what others think about this book. Thanks for the loan!
5/19/04 - mailed to mom-of-one.

Another book received in the goody box! I can't wait to get into this one. A WOMAN who sails around the world alone...I'm green with jealousy already!
