When Kendra Tamale returns to England from Australia she rents a room from Kyle, a divorced father of two, and begins a new job. She's looking forward to a fresh start and simple life.

Kyle's five-year-old twins, Summer and Jaxon, have other ideas and quickly adopt Kendra as their new mother - mainly because she lets them eat marshmallows for breakfast. Kendra eventually becomes a part of their lives, even though she's hiding a painful secret that makes her keep everyone - especially children - at arm's length.

Then Kendra bumps into the man who shares her awful secret, and things fall apart: she can't sleep, she can't eat, she's suspended from work, and the kids are taken away by their mother. The only way to fix things is to confess to the terrible mistake she made all those years ago. But that's something she swore never to do . . .

New author/book to me. I'm curious!

Journal Entry 8 by wingDelphi_Readerwing at Delphi - Δελφοί , Fokida Greece on Friday, July 16, 2021
This is less fluff and more serious than it seems at first sight which in theory should work better for me. But I found the characters and their behavior too farfetched for my liking and it has an element that I have less and less tolerance for as the time pass by: All women depicted in the book seem to have a life that radiates around the concept of men and children. I hate it when authors think all women and all women all the time have no other traits other than been a man's woman and a mother or than contemplating all the time on how to become one or seen their life dissolve when they can't achieve this!

In theory some twists towards the end explain why some characters behave the way they behave, but personally I still found all of them stereotypical and unreal, while the prologue reveals a good part of the plot anyway. I have no problem to read books with characters I don't bond with, but something on the plot or theme or writting style must captivate me. I found the contemplations and melodrama and farfetched developements too over the top and unbelievable, so I often skimmed whole paragraphs, something I rarely do. The end was a bit ridiculous too on my opinion.

Maybe it's just a case of wrong book for this person. Anyhow, thanks once again for giving me the chance to try this author. I hope future readers will enjoy this more than me...

The book has arrived safely in Finland, thank you! I may have read something else by Koomson before, I think, at least the name sounds familiar.

Btw, Delphi_Reader, I immediately recognized the card as being a Finnish painting! I probably have sent out a few of those myself.
