I avoided reading this book for several years because I had gotten it into my head that there was something scary or creepy about it. I finally picked up a copy and decided to give it a chance. After the first few chapters, I saw there was nothing creepy so I kept reading. I got lulled into a false sense of security because about two thirds of the way into the book, I got hit with the super creepy stuff. The strange thing is that there was one detail about Gottfried's death that made me think [spoiler - highlight to read] Harriet killed him in the boat because he was trying to molest her but then nothing came of it so I thought I was just hyper suspicious after years of watching procedurals on tv. When it turned out much later in the book that my initial suspicion was correct, I was disappointed that I ended up being right because it seemed like such a cliche twist.

The story brings together several characters: Lisbeth Salander (who I kept calling "salamander" in my head), a quiet woman who still looks like a 13 year old who shops at Hot Topic. As a result of her violent outbursts in school and her refusal to say anything when questioned, she has been classified as emotionally disturbed and dangerously violent. After a stint in an institution, the social worker assigned to her case tried to help her live as normal a life as possible. She lived in her own apartment and was given access to her money. After his death, the new guardian appointed to her case decides to restrict her independence.
