Interesting memoir by Martha Beck about her pregnancy with her son Adam. Martha unexpectedly became pregnant while getting her graduate degree at Harvard and then found out that her baby had Downs. As a side note, it's very interesting to see how far prenatal diagnostics have come- Adam was born sometime around 1987/88- and Beck didn't have routine ultrasounds at a teaching hospital.
I read this very eagerly because I've known people who've met Beck and heard her speak and think she's amazing. And she has lived an interesting life. However, I was a bit put off by her beating the reader over the head with the culture of Harvard-some of the descriptions bordered on caricature.
Also, I expected more about Adam's diagnosis earlier in the book. Beck learns about the birth defect about 2/3 of the way through the book. However, her writing about finding out her son's condition, about the decisions they needed to make, and about other people's reactions was very beautiful once it did enter the story.
Worth a read.
