from the back of the book:
In 1886, middle-aged piano tuner named Edgar Drake receives an unusual commission from the British War Office: to travel to the remote jungles of northeast Burma and there repair a rare piano belonging to an eccentric army surgeon who has proven mysteriously indispensable to the imperial design. From this irresistible beginning, The Piano Tuner launches readers into a world of seductive, vibrantly rendered characters and enmeshes them in an unbreakable spell of storytelling.

The Piano Tuner is a very interesting story all the way from the first pages to the last. Edgar Drake, a shy, British piano tuner, is commissioned to the far reaches of Burma to tune a piano. More than a bit curious, Edgar accepts the project and starts his travels to Burma. Once there he becomes accustomed to the culture and his new life, hesitating to return to England. Not fully aware (or maybe just naïve) of the political unrest surrounding Burma, Edgar finds this journey is more than just tuning a piano.

An interesting read. Edgar, a piano tuner, is commissioned by the British War Office to tune a rare piano for an army surgeon in Burma. He leaves his wife and life in England for an arduous and lengthy journey to Burma. After his arrival, he becomes enamored with life in Burma and settles in with no desire to return to London any time soon. Unaware of the political unrest and the surgeon's involvement, Edgar finds himself drawn into dangerous political activity.

The author is very descriptive of the land and people in his writing.
