7 journalers for this copy...
Jess was happy when they lived by the bay, but something is wrong with their new house. Since they moved, Vida is wild and furious and believes in all kinds of strange magic. Clem hasn't even unpacked, and their mum is lying sick and silent in the room upstairs. And Jess can feel someone following her, invisible legs quietly keeping step... Starry Nights is a haunting mystery of a family caught in a twilight zone.

Lovely story of a family of five who move away from Avalon after Mum has a breakdown. It tells of anger, ghosts, death, grief and finally, life again. Well written and enjoyable....!

The book is on its way to the winner of the Australian Literature Sweepstake. Congratulations and I hope you will enjoy the read!
Arrived today, and it certainly looks intriguing! Many thanks, sedna5213.
I agree with Andrea99: the perfect word for this book is "lovely." I can't imagine why BookCrossing put it in the 'Horror' category, since there is nothing remotely frightening in it. There are a couple of visitors from beyond the grave, but they bear no malice and do nobody any harm. In fact, one of them plays a pivotal role in gently helping a family acknowledge and move on from a tragedy.
I only wish there were more specifically Australian content in this book. That's kind of silly, since the author and most readers know perfectly well that they're in Australia and don't need to shout it back and forth every ten pages. But I do know now what a doona is.

Mailed to GoryDetails as a Wish List RABCK. Enjoy!
This well-traveled book reached me today; many thanks!
I enjoyed this book very much, though I never got a sense of it being set in Australia - not that that really matters to the story. While it is a ghost story, and does involve some real-life fears - from death, illness, and loss to scary changes in the personalities of loved ones - it's not a horror story, though I admit that the early chapters where poor Jess is trying to cope with sister Vida's sudden shift into compulsive superstition were very unnerving.
I liked the way the situation was revealed gradually; I guessed some elements early on, but others crept up on me, and I enjoyed that. I also liked the sense of family, even when everything was so badly broken. One quibble: I didn't feel that the author distinguished the ages of the kids very well; by the time the story explicitly gave all their ages I was surprised, as - judging by their thoughts and actions - I'd pretty much assumed that Jess was older and Vida and Clem considerably younger than the author said they were!
But aside from that, I found it a really good story, with a touching conclusion.
