I read all Jodi Picoult's books a while back so it is hard to remember what I liked about each one! But I enjoyed them all.

Journal Entry 2 by mrsbridgewater at on Wednesday, January 21, 2004
Released on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 at British Heart Foundation Shop, book and music dept in Basingstoke, England United Kingdom.

Journal Entry 3 by chelseagirl from Faringdon, Oxfordshire United Kingdom on Friday, January 23, 2004
Picked this up at the OBCZ in Basingstoke today. I've heard of the author but never seen anything by her, so am looking forward to reading this at some point in the future.

Journal Entry 4 by chelseagirl from Faringdon, Oxfordshire United Kingdom on Friday, January 19, 2007
Ahem, okay, three years on I still haven't got round to reading this!!! I know, that's really naughty of me. Especially as I've been on several rings for other Jodi Picoult books and in fact I'm even reading another of hers as we speak!

My excuse (and it's not a very good one really) is that for the last year most of my books have been languishing in storage and I've only just had a chance to bring them in and sort them out.

Anyway ..... I'm going to pass this on to my mum herrgirl as she has more reading time on her hands than me, and then hopefully she'll set up a ray as I know there are a lot of Picoult fans around and as far as I know most of them haven't read this one. So I'll join the ray and then there'll be pressure on me to read it and I might actually manage at last!!

Journal Entry 5 by herrgirl from Vale of White Horse, Oxfordshire United Kingdom on Saturday, January 20, 2007
Collected this from chelseagirl at today's Salcey Forest meet. I've read and enjoyed several Jodi Picoult novels and am looking forward to this one, and - yes - I will offer it as a ray afterwards!

Journal Entry 6 by herrgirl from Vale of White Horse, Oxfordshire United Kingdom on Thursday, February 1, 2007
Abandoned by her mother when she was five years old, Paige O'Toole has been left with painful doubts about her self-worth. She leaves her Chicago home at 18 to fulfil herself as an artist, but must work in a diner because she can't afford art school. When she marries Harvard medical student Nicholas Prescott, his parents disown him, disapproving of their Irish Catholic daughter-in-law. Again Paige is forced to sideline her creative needs and work as a waitress in order to support Nicholas until he is able to establish his career as a cardiac surgeon. Paige is soon overwhelmed by the demands of Nicholas' socially sophisticated world, and after the birth of their son she becomes emotionally and physically exhausted. Unable to communicate her terrors about herself to Nicholas, she leaves him to search for her mother, who may hold the answers to her life. Told in flashbacks, and alternately through Paige's and Nicholas' thoughts, this is a story of childhood and adolescence, the demands of motherhood, the hard paths of personal growth and the generosity of spirit required by love.

Jodi Picoult is very good at getting into her readers' heads and making them think and feel everything her characters are going through. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as I have done with everything I have read by this writer.

Arrived today.
Thank you, will read immediately as I finished a book last night, so good timing!
It looks great, but will add more once finished.

Journal Entry 9 by Betty22 from Wandsworth, Greater London United Kingdom on Thursday, February 15, 2007
Am desperately trying to finish this tonight so that I can send it off to flanners before I go on my exciting trip to New York.
Have really enjoyed this so far. It feels very different from the other Jodi Picoult books that I have read. Am nearly at the crux of the story, so can't wait to see how it all ends.
Hope you all enjoy it too!

Journal Entry 10 by flanners from Havant, Hampshire United Kingdom on Monday, February 19, 2007
Received today - many thanks. (Loved the postcard!)

Journal Entry 11 by flanners from Havant, Hampshire United Kingdom on Thursday, March 1, 2007
This certainly is very different from her later oeuvre, and it made an interesting contrast.

The ambivalence in the heart of every new mother is an endlessly fascinating subject for me, but I must confess although I enjoyed many passages of this novel, I lost patience with pretty much every single character in the end and felt 400 odd pages was too long to sort themselves out!

Still very grateful to have had the opportunity to read it though, thank you.

This will be in the post to yesterdaysgirl next week.

Journal Entry 12 by flanners from Havant, Hampshire United Kingdom on Tuesday, March 13, 2007
Sorry for the delay in mailing - had a very weird couple of weeks.

In today's post.

Journal Entry 13 by yesterdaysgirl from Frimley, Surrey United Kingdom on Thursday, March 15, 2007
Thanks for this Lucy. No need to worry about the delay, I have a pile of ring books to read anyway!

Will try and get to this within the month. I'm a quick reader, so I probably shall, but apologies if I don't.

Journal Entry 14 by yesterdaysgirl from Frimley, Surrey United Kingdom on Saturday, July 14, 2007
Just started this today, so sorry it's been on the TBR pile for months... real life got a bit in the way.

Ooops!

I hadn't realised I had this book so long!

It was a fantastic read, thanks for sharing. I am now ready to pass it on, and will PM crosspatch accordingly.

Arrived. Thank you yesterdaysgirl.

Journal Entry 17 by wingCross-patchwing from Leicester, Leicestershire United Kingdom on Friday, March 7, 2008
This was a wonderful book. I am so glad I took it away to read on holiday because it gave me more time to enjoy it all - more like wallow in it! I particularly liked the use of the two voices, particularly to break the rhythm and the time jumps.

I am going to the post now to send the book onto vespa who I am sure will enjoy it.

Journal Entry 18 by Vespa from Weymouth, Dorset United Kingdom on Saturday, March 22, 2008
Big apologies.... this book arrived just as I was leaving for a few days away, and I just shoved it in my bag without journalling its arrival :-(

I found this book slower than the usual Picoult pace, it didn't seem to grab me and toss me right in there with the characters. Normally I find I can identify immediately with them, and their dilemmas are mine, but I didn't feel as much empathy with Paige as I have with past characters.
That being said, I did enjoy the story, so thanks for sharing. Will get Sunflowergirl's addy this weekend and will get the book posted early in the week

Journal Entry 19 by sunflowergirl from Carlisle, Cumbria United Kingdom on Thursday, March 27, 2008
Thanks for sending this on to me Vespa (and thanks to herrgirl for letting me join the bookray). I love Jodi Picoult's books and so can't wait to read this one. I may be a bit slow with it as the Easter holidays are about over and I'm back to Uni on Monday. I'll get to it as quick as I can though and will journal it again once I've read it.

Journal Entry 20 by sunflowergirl from Carlisle, Cumbria United Kingdom on Friday, May 23, 2008
I'm sorry that I'm slow getting to this book, I've been so busy with Uni work recently that I just haven't had chance to read anything other than books related to my course. I've now finished my exams and am looking forward to catching up with some reading. I started reading this today so should finish it soon. I'll journal it once I've read it and then will send it on as soon as I can.

Journal Entry 21 by sunflowergirl from Carlisle, Cumbria United Kingdom on Sunday, June 1, 2008
I've just this minute finished reading this book and thought I'd journal it right away. I found that this novel didn't capture me in the way that Jodi Picoult's books usually do; normally I find her books unputdownable but this one I wasn't quite so hooked on. Maybe it's because this is one of her earlier books and she hadn't quite perfected her formula yet. I did enjoy the book though and am really glad I had the chance to read it. I especially loved the idea of Paige's artwork, her drawings sounded so amazing and I wish I could actually see them.

I've already contacted chelseagirl and got her address so I'll post the book on as soon as I can.

Journal Entry 22 by sunflowergirl from Carlisle, Cumbria United Kingdom on Monday, June 2, 2008
My mum very kindly took this to the Post Office for me today so it's now on its way to chelseagirl.

Journal Entry 23 by chelseagirl from Faringdon, Oxfordshire United Kingdom on Thursday, June 5, 2008
Arrived yesterday, perhaps I'll actually get round to reading it now, especially as there's someone after me!!

Journal Entry 24 by chelseagirl from Faringdon, Oxfordshire United Kingdom on Friday, August 1, 2008
A slow burner, this one - took me a while to get going but once I did I loved this, and especially loved that it's NOT like all the other Jodi Picoult books I've read!! Strong characters, not all likeable but I grew to love some of them. Having suffered from post-natal depression after the birth of my son I could identify with the feelings of helplessness though I could never run away!!!

I'll send this off to LindyLouMac asap.

Journal Entry 25 by LindyLouMac from Tywyn, Wales United Kingdom on Tuesday, April 7, 2009
Arrived safely yesterday thankyou. A very early novel from Jodi Picoult, in fact her second I think, first published in 1993, which I have been looking forward to reading for some time now.

Journal Entry 26 by LindyLouMac from Tywyn, Wales United Kingdom on Friday, August 7, 2009
I only discovered the work of this prolific author under three years ago. As I have at various levels enjoyed all eight read previously, I am now trying to read all the published novels by her that I can get hold of.
Harvesting the Heart was her second novel first published in 1993 and although it certainly does not have the polish or topical moralistic style of her more recent novels it is still an enjoyable read.

Basically the story tells of the anguish and joy of parenthood told in flashbacks by the two protagonists Paige and Nicholas Prescott. Paige’s mother had abandoned her young daughter and husband when Paige was still very young. Circumstances force her to run away from home herself at eighteen and she soon meets and marries Nicholas a very successful medical student. His parents were very much against the marriage, disowned by them they struggle with a lifestyle that soon overwhelms Paige, who is not used to such a sophisticated lifestyle as demanded by Nicholas’s rising career. After the birth of their son Max Paige starts to seriously doubt her own maternal instincts and capability to be a good mother. It is then that history seems to repeat itself as she in her turn runs away in search of answers.
This is an absorbing novel which is written in the already emerging distinct style that Jodi Picoult has now made her speciality. I would recommend this to all fans of her novels.

Although this book has been travelling for five years now and is looking a bit tatty around the edges it still has a long life ahead of it if treated carefully. So I am going to offer it up for another Bookray, as I know of a few people who still have this on their Wishlists.

This was quite an enjoyable read, although I didn't find it as gripping as "My Sister's Keeper" (the only other Jodi Picoult novel I have read so far). What I do love is Picoult's writing style and the way she manages to make the readers feel what the characters are going through.

Thanks for sharing LindyLouMac:o)

Wow! This book has traveled a long way now! What sort of state is it in now?

Journal Entry 34 by Mallary from Ginestas, Languedoc-Roussillon France on Monday, September 21, 2009
I thoroughly enjoyed this book; I wasn't sure if I would as I've been finding Jodi Picoult's books too formulaic recently and I was going to give up reading them. I'm so glad I didn't!

This story struck a chord in me, having suffered from post-natal depression and feeling all the things Paige felt including being abandoned by a parent but not having the luck of the remaining parent being loving or supportive as Paige had. I felt sorry for her Dad on many occasions in this book.

Not all the characters were likable or easy to understand, but I think this is what Jodi Picoult excels at.

I shall now parcel this up and send it onto scotsbookie within the next few days. Thank you for sharing this well-travelled little book. Apart from a few creases and some sellotape, it seems to be holding up rather well!

Ooops - finished this a while ago and thought I had already made a journal entry....

I found this very different from the other Jodi Picoult books I have read but I did enjoy it a lot.

I asked BOKWORMY for her address a while ago via email but haven't yet had a reply so if anyone could confirm her current address for me by PM I would be grateful.

Now on its way to BOKWORMY.

Mrs Bridgewater - it is still in surprisingly good condition given it's travels!

Through the letterbox today....totally unexpected. Wow, how this book has travelled around and is still intact. Thanks for sending on Bridget, shame you didn't get time to read it.

Off to start it now.

Journal Entry 42 by Inver at Aberdeen, Scotland United Kingdom on Monday, November 1, 2010
Finished.....and enjoyed. I would say this was a much gentler read than normal Jodi Picoult's I have read. It touches a mother's heart in places you can only know if you have given birth. Not sure if I could have done what Paige did though and leave, but can totally appreciate how she felt. Finding her own mother definitely helped answer questions and help her sort out her future. I wasn't quite sure how it was going to end and to me it still wasn't quite tied up how I thought it would, a bit of leaving it up to you to make up your own mind.

A couple of wee repair jobs required to a couple of pages, but still intact. I have nikel27 address and will get it in the post this week.

Journal Entry 45 by Melamura at Montefiascone, Lazio Italy on Monday, May 23, 2011
Sorry - my apologies as I forgot to do a journal entry when this arrived quite some time ago!
This has taken me ages to read as I found it very slow to get into and it was not like the many other titles I have read by Jodi Picoult. Mostly I find her books unputdownable but this was a little different. This may be because it was one of her earlier novels and she hadn't found her stride yet. That said it was an OK read, although I really didn't have much empathy for Paige and I found her character slightly irritating by the end.
Will pass on to Maireen when I see her next.
