Mistborn: The Final Empire (Book No. 1)

I wanted to read a Brandon Sanderson novel before this years When Words Collide and I'm glad I picked Mistborn.
The characters, environment, and magic all hit the right notes with me for fantasy. I'm really looking forward to the rest of this series.
From brandonsanderson.com:
I came into this book with two big ideas for the plot. The first was that of a heist story, like SNEAKERS or OCEAN’S ELEVEN involving a gang of gentlemen thieves who each had a distinctive magic power. I wanted to tell the story of how their different magics and abilities worked together for them to pull an incredible caper.
The second idea was to write a story about a world where the good guys lost. I wanted to take the standard fantasy story I’d read a dozen times, that of a young peasant hero who went on a quest to defeat a Dark Lord, and turn it on its head. What if the Dark Lord won? What if, in the final climactic moments, he killed the hero and took over the world?

Picked up at BC meeting
A bit too wordy - took me a very long time to get into this book. Started and restarted several times. After pushing through the first ~third of the book, I got more involved with the characters and the book became easier to read. It has an intriguing (unpleasant) world and an emotional story.
Going back to Calgary BC group

Interesting first book in the trilogy. I read it on vacation which is what I recommend as it is a pretty weighty book and will take some time to get into.

Caught this book at the monthly book crossing meeting at the Cravings Market Restaurant.
I really enjoyed this book, the new and different fantasy world really drew me in, and the strong female protagonist stole my heart. A must read for anyone who loves fantasy.
This book will be released at the monthly Book Crossing meeting at Cravings Market Restaurant in Calgary
