Set in Venice, this is an early Commissario Brunetti police prodeedural. It poses the question of responsibility to the world when the Commissario's wife, Paola, protests the selling of sex tours to far countries by lobbing a rock through a travel agent office. The owner of the travel agency is then murdered, with a note dropped on his body stating that the sex tours must be stamped out.

Paolo is devestated, thinking that she set up this murder, and Brunetti tries to find out where responsibility lies in a society that allows us all to close our eyes to distateful facts. Good twists.
