Sycamore Row - Jake Brigance, Bk 2
Author: John Grisham
Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten, will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County's most notorious citizens, just three years earlier.
The second will raises far more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly? And what does it all have to do with a piece of land once known as Sycamore Row?

Another excellent courtroom procedural from Grisham. This is a sequel to A Time to Kill, one of my favorite Grisham's. This one involves the litigation of a handwritten will left by a man, Seth Hubbard, who is dying with cancer and hangs himself. The will leaves a fortune to his black housekeeper and cuts out his children from any benefits. The questions is why would he leave most of his fortune to his housekeeper who he only knew for about 3 years. Was he influenced by the housekeeper? Was he in his right mind? I found this novel to be engrossing as it works it way through the motivations of Hubbard, the history of Lettie Lang, the housekeeper, and the real reason she was named as the beneficiary in the will. High recommendation!

Well this book was definitely NOT was of his better books (even though my husband loved it). It seemed to go on and on and on forever, very tedious. The story is about a very wealthy man that is dying of cancer, commits suicide and rewrites his will to cut out all family members and leaves his wealth to his black maid. Of course there is a trail. No surprises at the ending and a bit disappointing.
I am mailing this out to fathermurphy as part of the wishlist tag game.

Thank you spoiledrotten for the tag of the Grisham wishlist book. I am looking forward to reading it.
Grisham goes back to the beginning starting with "A Time To Kill" and continuing with this part of the story. When a wealthy man dies and leaves nearly everything to his black maid, his children go to trial to overturn the hand written will. This will expose old racial tensions and force the residents of Ford county to confront their past. Good story, especially the second half of the book. Enjoyed the read!

Thanks for the book!
The suicide of Seth Hubbard starts a chain of events in Ford county Mississippi, the likes of which haven't been seen before. Mr. Hubbard it seem is wealthy beyond belief and has left everything to his black maid Lettie Lang. He has made explicit instructions to his lawyer, Jake Brigance to execute his will as hand-written and to defend it at all costs. Nothing to go to his children or grandchildren, almost everything to Lettie, a small amount to his church, and a small equal amount to his younger brother. Of course, his children want the whole pie or at least the largest slice of the rich pie, so they go to trial to try to have this hand written will thrown out. And the will Mr. Hubbard had a lawyer draw up years before executed as they were the primary beneficiaries. A very interesting trial ensues. A good read!!

Wishlist book arrived! Thank you.
rabck from fathermurphy; Good book about a suicide, and the business man leaves everything to his black housekeeper, instead of his estranged kids. But why? And can Jake Brigance defend the hand written will against the slick city attorney's that the kids have hired? Interesting premise with a twist at the very end that explains why Seth Hubbard did what he did.
