"Nothing links person to person like the frequent passage from hand to hand of a good book."

I thoroughly enjoyed this saga that began early in the 20th century in Korea and progressed almost until present day in Japan. I've visited both countries many times, so the languages, cultures, and histories were familiar. I didn't know much detail about the Japanese occupation of Korea, and I found that part fascinating. I also had not known anything about the Korean community in Japan. It was fairly enlightening. The family saga, starting with Sunja's parents and going through to Sunja's grandchildren, was engaging and often heartbreaking. The strength of the women felt striking and real to me. Women do bear so much suffering and work so hard in most of the world. I really loved the characters of Noa and Mozasu. Their stories were complex, and I enjoyed watching the development over time. A wonderful story overall, recommended.

A wandering book -- the karma of literature!
