7 out of 10

Once again I seem to be coming into a series part way. This the fourth book in the series. I've not read the other ones, so I can say that you can read this as a standalone book and not feel that you're unable to follow the plot. However, I have also seen other people say this isn't the best in the series, and having read it I can see what they mean. So in that respect, it's probably best read as part of the series, and if you were planning on only reading one book from the series, it would be better to choose a different book.

This is a mystery of murder, embezzling funds, hostile takeovers and business. There are also a lot of other little mysteries and side cases that she takes on during the book, so it's almost more like the ongoing saga of Frances Doughty's lady detective agency of 1800s London, rather than one specific mystery. Although all of her mini mysteries kind of tie in. But it moves oh so slowly - edge of your seat stuff this ain't - and for a lot of it I really couldn't have cared less who actually did it. Some of the mini mysteries were kind of abruptly tied off and immediately forgotten about, so you might wonder why they were even included in the first place.

What I did think this was good at was capturing the era. It was well written and it felt like she really knew her history and captured the voice of people of the time. It's also interesting to see the various lives of women, and how they struggled to get anything done - things that we take for granted. And they are repressed and used as commodities by everyone as this is considered the natural order of things - even by other women. SPOILERS**************** Although there was a slightly odd resolution to the Sweetman children mystery, I did have only so-so sympathy for them. Mary Sweetman used Mrs Finn really quite heartlessly, when you considered the lies told and what she denied Mrs Finn. And then at the end, Mrs Finn seemed to just disappear - they're all off to live happily ever after with the children.

Interestingly, I have the Chloroform history book that Stratmann has also written. I've still to read it, but I shall have to dig it out and give it a go.

8 out of 10

Released 3 yrs ago (12/16/2014 UTC) at Brigantes Bar & Brasserie OBCZ / Meetup Venue in York, North Yorkshire United Kingdom

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

This was fun! I loved Frances Doughty and her sidekick Sarah. Set in the Victorian period, it did have the feel of the era, with the fad for diets and writing to newspapers. There was a bit of a Gilbert and Sullivan feel to the characters that I rather liked. A fun mystery for a Sunday afternoon read!

To be released at the monthly York Bookcrossing meetup.

Since this has been kicking around for a while now, in order to free up some space on the Brigantes OBCZ Bookshelf, I thought I'd move it on to the Ye Olde Starre Inne OBCZ Bookshelf - where hopefully it'll find some new readers...

Finally getting round to reading this. Appears to be good (60 pages behind). Will offer next to somebody who has visited York for the first time last month.

Detecting is a somewhat slow process. No wonder the back cover says "the slowly unraveling evidence..." I keep falling asleep while reading.

Taking waters in Bath was mentioned... Here is the Royal Mineral Water Hospital which I saw a couple of months ago.

Finally finished. An ok read, although there were parts where the writer had streched her imagination a bit too far. For example concerning the children of Mr Sweetman.
