On the eve of her ninth birthday, Rose Edelstein bites into her mother's homemade lemon-chocolate cake and discovers she has a magical gift: she can taste her mother's emotions in the slice. All at once her cheerful, can-do mother tastes of despair and desperation. Suddenly, and for the rest of her life, food becomes perilous. Anything can be revealed at any meal.

Rose's gift forces her to confront the truth behind her family's emotions - her mother's sadness, her father's detachment and her brother's clash with the world. But as Rose grows up, she learns that there are some secrets even her taste buds cannot discern.

The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake is about the pain of loving those whom you know too much about, and the secrets that exist within every family. At once profound, funny, wise and sad, this is a novel to savour.

Thanks hippolein again - seems that I took quite a few of your books from the shelves ;)
The cover is beautiful - and the story seems a good one too. It may take a while to get all these books read.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

I debated with myself whether to read this book or not. It seems really interesting but I just have way too many books to read for the moment. And as I found it on Mecu's wishlist I'm releasing this forward - enjoy the book!

Thanks TiiMa for the wishlist book! As I said at today's meet-up, it might take some time before I get to read this story, so the book could be returning to you in couple of years. ;)

Well, thanks to Chania's yearly release challenge, I ended up reading this lovely book much earlier than I thought. And I liked it! A story about a family, food and feelings, hopes and wishes - and disappointments. It would have worked without the supernatural fate of Rose's brother but it didn't bother my reading too much.

Lovely book! Loved the story of Rose's life, and also the strange, odd things happening to people. And the language was beautiful too!
