Ian and Kate met in Japan & travelled around Asia before settling in Manhatten. Now Kate has died, leaving behind grieving Ian & 10yo daughter Mattie. Kate last wish is for Ian to take Mattie on a trip to their favorite places in Asia, leaving a film canister with a note for each to read in each country and asking Mattie to leave her pictures and sketches in "wishing" trees, where she can see them. Apparently the "wishing" trees are a real thing. At the last country, Kate writes that Ian should look up her friend Georgia & her daughter, which proves to be a return to the living for Ian.
