This is book 2 of Steven Erikson's the Malazan book of the fallen series.
This first was excellent - and book 2 followed some if the characters that you came to love in the first book.
If anything, the second book was better because the series had gotten into its stride.
One issue however, is you can't read this without reading the first book.
