Heart of a Samurai

Newbery Honor Book.
Based on a true story: when Manjiro is fourteen, he is with a small group of fishermen who are caught in a storm at sea. They wash up on a small island and nearly starve to death. They are saved in the nick of time...by "hairy barbarians" - a ship of American whalers. Because Japan is a closed country in 1841, they cannot return home and must make new lives for themselves in a strange new world.
In 1918 a samurai sword was presented to the town of Fairhaven, Massachusetts: the hometown of the whaling ship captain. The commemorative booklets for the original sword and the replacement are available online.
Here's another copy on my BookCrossing shelf.

I don't think Manjiro ever went to Georgia, but his story is going there in JennyC1230's Shrinking Teens Bookbox.

I really enjoyed this book and learning about Japanese culture, whaling ships and how incredible America must have seemed to someone from such a closed and hierarchical society as Japan.
This was a quick and absorbing read, thanks very much for sharing!
