From a box of books my sister-in-law was getting rid of.
Reasonably predictable story of a family in a small mining community in post-WWII America. Some of the characters had the potential to be quite interesting, but the author was trying to fit in all of their stories over such a long time period that it kept feeling like she was skipping ahead or to another character just when I was starting to engage with the story.
Interesting to compare the mining accident (ok, technically that's a spoiler, but it's a book about a mining town - of course there's going to be some sort of mining accident at some point in the story!) with Pike River - depressing how little has changed...
