A boy is found stabbed to death in the woods in a small town. Andy Barber, ADA, takes the case and begins the investigation, until his own son, Jacob, is accused of the murder. This book takes twists and turns and ultimately leaves the reader a little dizzy. I enjoyed it a lot!

This book was difficult to put down once I opened it. It's a family drama, a courtroom drama, and a twisting thriller all at once. It was emotionally easier to read than "We Need to Talk About Kevin" (which would have made me think twice about raising children) but still gut-wrenching and very frightening to think about being in the same position as Andy and Laurie in this story. The background story about Andy's father was interesting, and I knew it had to lead somewhere, not just dead end, but I really did not see what was coming toward the end of the story, none of it. That's some good writing, I think. Jacob was a difficult character to like, and I felt surprised that the parents did not choose to delve more deeply into his psych assessment with treatment or more testing. Maybe there just was not time in the story for life to become normal enough to do it. Personally, I think many boys that age are sociopaths to some degree, but most are never examined to find out to what degree. It is a shame that parents are usually blamed when the child goes so out of control (I will admit to that being my first reaction also). Sometimes they are fully or partly to blame, and sometimes not at all. I enjoyed the narration in the first person by the father; his insights as both prosecutor and father made the story richer.

FROM BACK COVER: Andy Barber's job is to put killers behind bars. And when a boy from his son Jacob's school is found stabbed to death, Andy is doubly determined to find and prosecute the perpetrator. Until a crucial piece of evidence turns up linking Jacob to the murder. And suddenly Andy and his wife find their son accused of being a cold-blooded killer. In the face of every parent's worst nightmare, they will do anything to defend their child. Because, deep down, they know him better than anyone. Don't they?

I finished reading this this week and I liked it a lot more than I had anticipated. I am usually not interested in court room drama but this was different and better. I didn't like Jacob since minute one and his dad Andy Barber was so clueless that I laughed out loud more than once at his dumb attitude. I liked this interesting story a lot. A good book and I will share with a friend
