On the surface, about the only things I have in common with this book's protagonist are being female and having a younger brother: I'm not gay or Cuban-American, and it's been a while since I was a teenager. I was raised in a household with two parents, my Spanish is less-than-minimal, and I think I've been to Miami, once.

None of that stopped me from rooting for Laura and wanting her to find her own place in the world.

As a young friend of mine said, the important thing is not whether someone is gay or straight. The real question is: do you care about this person, and do you want them to be part of your life?
