And the Mountains Echoed
7 journalers for this copy...

So, then. You want a story and I will tell you one...Afghanistan, 1952. Abdullah and his sister Pari live in the small village of Shadbagh. To Abdullah, Pari, as beautiful and sweet-natured as the fairy for which she was named, is everything. More like a parent than a brother, Abdullah will do anything for her, even trading his only pair of shoes for a feather for her treasured collection. Each night they sleep together in their cot, their skulls touching, their limbs tangled. One day the siblings journey across the desert to Kabul with their father. Pari and Abdullah have no sense of the fate that awaits them there, for the event which unfolds will tear their lives apart; sometimes a finger must be cut to save the hand.

Highly recommendable!

Thank you! What a lovely surprise!

Frustratingly, I couldn't get into this book. This irritates me when it is a wishlist book. :(

Sending as part of HGG to Aberpeter. Enjoy!

I am laughing and laughing! Glad I didn't wait for Christmas to acknowledge receiving this HGG package even though I was going to wait to open it! You were right, lauraloo!!! You DID send me aberpeter's surprise. But I won't tell. I'll get the correct address from Elizardbreath, otherwise known as the Holiday Gift Giving Maven, and send it on to the correct person. I'll make sure to make a note that it's from you! This is fun!

A special surprise holiday gift for Aberpeter in Washington state from LauraLoo29 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada! Silly book made a detour to sunny Florida to get a tan and to dip its toes (does a book HAVE toes?) in the Gulf of Mexico before continuing its trip to the Pacific Northwest! Could NOT have gone more out of its way, and still be in the USA! LOL! Happy Traveling, Book! Happy Reading, Aberpeter!

hahaha - what an incredible journey this book has taken.
Thank you Lauraloo29 for the book and thank you dove-i-libra for managing the detour in Florida :)

And the Mountains Echoed is a beautifully written story of a bond between a brother and sister, separated at a young age. Hosseini tells the story from multiple voices, giving the story more depth and a varied narrative.

Adding to the Around the World Bookbox.

I have another copy of this on my TBR pile so I'm going to put this on the pile to go into a future book box. I enjoyed The Kite Runner by the same author, so I'm looking forward to this one.

Funny thing - I picked this up to send it for the Authors from Unusual Places Sweeps but couldn't remember reading it so I went to re-read it and had absolutely no memory of reading it before. Now, upon looking at the previous journal entries, I understand - I hadn't! The other copy is still sitting in Mount To-Be-Read.
I'm very happy that I finally got to this, as I enjoyed it immensely. I thought it was touching and sweet, and I liked the way that various members of the family were followed up on in the end.
I hope the sweeps winner enjoys it as much as I did!

This book was waiting on my doorstep this morning! It is not a title that I'm familiar with, though the author's name is one I definitely know. I haven't read anything by Khaled Hosseini before, so this book will be my introduction! Thank you, hobbit (and for the bookmark inside it too)!
