Unusual little book. Quite entertaining to read, specially the picture of life in Africa.
Mailed to hleeann as a trade for Midwives by Chris Bohjalian.
Just received. THANKS!!!!
I really enjoyed the first in The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series and I look forward to reading more. Mma Ramotswe is an adorable character. I enjoyed the simplicity of the detective story--no blood and guts, just simple cases that need to be solved, much like we find in our own lives. Likewise, I enjoyed the setting of Africa for the novel. It's a very different kind of book for the mystery fan, but therein is its charm.
I have two family members who are planning on reading it and then it will be off and traveling again.
I look forward to reading TEARS OF THE GIRAFFE, the second in the series that another BXer has agreed to trade for.
Thanks EDDI! I hope you enjoy MIDWIVES just as much as I enjoyed this. I promise it is on its way!

released as a trade
What a treat to read a book set in such an interesting locale (Botswana)! This first book in the series is not so much a mystery as a short novel about life in this African country. I am very much looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series.
Sending to BXer Eailisaid for trade.

Received in the mail today. Thanks so much! I can't wait to read it.
Update: Finished reading last night.
The simple story and use of language in "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" may not appeal to everyone (particularly die-hard mystery/thriller fans who are used to more action and suspense), but I found this novel to be full of charm. It's sweet and slow-moving.
The unconventional heroine, Precious Ramotswe, gambles her inheritence when she decides to start Botswana's first female detective agency. The cases she takes on are, for the most part, simple every-day things. Throughout the story, her descriptions of life in Botswana, her love for her country and her fellow citizens, and the way she attempts to solve her cases are, again, filled with simple charm.
Normally I have problems when a male author tries to write from the female point-of-view, but I didn't have much of a problem with that here. My one complaint is that the author seems to try too hard sometimes. He takes several opportunities to thump men on the head, having his female characters roll their eyes and sigh over male shortcomings. Overall though, I very much enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading more in the series.
