Moon Over Soho

Sequel to 'Rivers of London'
The song. That’s what London constable and sorcerer’s apprentice Peter Grant first notices when he examines the corpse of Cyrus Wilkins, part-time jazz drummer and full-time accountant, who dropped dead of a heart attack while playing a gig at Soho’s 606 Club. The notes of the old jazz standard are rising from the body—a sure sign that something about the man’s death was not at all natural but instead supernatural.
Body and soul—they’re also what Peter will risk as he investigates a pattern of similar deaths in and around Soho. With the help of his superior officer, Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Nightingale, the last registered wizard in England, and the assistance of beautiful jazz aficionado Simone Fitzwilliam, Peter will uncover a deadly magical menace—one that leads right to his own doorstep and to the squandered promise of a young jazz musician: a talented trumpet player named Richard “Lord” Grant—otherwise known as Peter’s dear old dad. I arrived home yesterday after travelling for the month of April, which included the BookCrossing Convention in Melbourne, Victoria and the OZ Mega Geocaching event in Murray Bridge, South Australia. This book was waiting in the pile of mail for me.
Thank you kiki66 for sending it and the postcard to me. I very much look forward to reading it. However I am reading another book at present. A big, thick book, and I've only just started it, but this book is next.

Wow, what a wonderful story. I really, really enjoyed it. The previous (and first) book in the series, Rivers of London, I scored nine out of ten. I finished my review for that book with the words "Although I scored this one nine, if the later books continue to mainly concentrate on the Constable, as they likely will, and have Nightingale as a background figure, I might not rate them as high."
Well this book does continue to mainly concentrate on the Constable, but despite that I have upped the score to ten out of ten, a very rare score for me to give a book, especially for a fiction story. I wasn't as concerned with this book that DC Grant was the main character; possibly because he has 'filled out' as a character.
It has become obvious that the story will continue through the following books, with a black, er, ethically challenged wizard, now on the scene. I look forward very much to reading these stories.
Thank you kiki66 for introducing me to this series. I will advertise to see if anyone else wants to join this Bookring.

The book is safely here in San Diego. Thanks, Billbooks, for sending it such a long way! I'll finish off the book I'm reading so I can get to this one. Happy holidays to all of you!
I read this awfully quickly since it came at a time when several book rays arrived. Good follow-on to the first book. It will be interesting to read later books. Peter Grant is a satisfying protagonist. Off now to JudySlump612!
Arrived here safely today - thanks, judygreeneyes!
Please note that greenbadger doesn't want to read the book anymore!
I changed my entry but I can't change goldenwattle's.
Enjoy!

I liked this a lot. Kiki66's journal entry did such a good job I won't try to add much. Aaronovitch has creat3ed an original but consistent magical system, and cleverly, uses the part of the plot about Peter Grant being an apprentice to clue us in without long diversions whilst the action stops. A person who knows and appreciates jazz would really love this story. I especially loved the narrative style - cheeky, and quite in character for the young DC. I just wish that I were a Londoner so I could have caught more of the references.
If there are more in the series - and the ending certainly seems to suggest that there will be - I definitely would like to be included in the next ring, if kiki66 is so kind as to offer. Thanks very much for this one!

Thank you for the book! I'll try to read this as fast as I can so I can send this back to kiki. =) I really liked the first book in this series and I can't wait to read this one too.
Finished! This was almost as good as the first book, but things were a bit confusing at some point. Too many thing going on at the same time. But I love reading these books because Aaronovitch describes London so well and it makes me want to travel again.
And back to Kiki! Thank you for giving me a chance to read this. =)
A whole year has gone by - and now this book is safely back home again!
And it took a journey around the world in the meantime ... incredible..
thanks everyone - also for handling it with care!
