Journal Entry 1 by Releanna from Wien Bezirk 23 - Liesing, Wien Austria on Sunday, December 8, 2013
Intense is the word for Ender's Game. Aliens have attacked Earth twice and almost destroyed the human species. To make sure humans win the next encounter, the world government has taken to breeding military geniuses -- and then training them in the arts of war... The early training, not surprisingly, takes the form of 'games'... Ender Wiggin is a genius among geniuses; he wins all the games... He is smart enough to know that time is running out. But is he smart enough to save the planet?

Years ago, I met a person who felt that Ender's Game was worth a Nobel and should be made an obligatory read for all school kids. I got the impression the book was profound and the most emotional read ever. Well..perhaps I should have first read Ender's Game at a younger age to totally agree. I did enjoy the book and read it at a really fast pace, but I was left to wait for something more heartfelt or intellectually challenging or..just something. What was somewhat distracting, was the very adult stance Ender had on life and everything thrown his way. He might have been a genious, but to me he was too much of a bitter/pessimistic/cynical person for a six year old. I couldn't think of him as a child throughout the book! To me, it felt like there had to be a build-up to the story, that Ender's time would soon run out and thence he'd have to start way too young...
Sadly though, child soldiers are used in battles in reality and the reasons for using them are just as unscrupulous as in the book. Web is used to spread altered truth, disinformation and mistrust...scary as any! I might have to read other books in the series if I come across with them...

After having heard many good things about this book, I was excited to read it. It did, fortunately, not disappoint. It was a great and interesting read! Scary how easy it is to manipulate children...

The book is safe with me - I brought it home from the BookCrossing meetup. It will however probably take some time before I get to read it, as I have a tendency to bring books home faster than I manage to read them.
