This book starts at a crazy place, and then takes you on a long crazy journey. I felt there were a lot of technical details in here, mainly scientific. However, it is a lovely, heartwarming story of a lovely relationship. The title is very apt, as it seems no matter what he does, the universe really is against Alex Woods. Although it tackles serious subjects, it is a very comic tale, with loveable characters. Enjoy!

I chose to read this because Kurt Vonnegut's writing is important to the plot line. I was pleasantly surprised by Alex and his meteorite-concussed noggin.

Alex is unusual, and this is exacerbated by the aforementioned meteorite incident and by his epilepsy. The story is his journey to understand his disease. He befriends an elderly neighbor who shares books and eventually helps Alex gain his independence, while the neighbor moves toward independence of his own.

I loved Alex's compassion and the way the author treated mental illness, physical illness and end-of-life. Sad, but really honest.

Whenever I read books like this one I wonder why I never had a crotchety neighbor to befriend. It happens to all the best characters and each one learns valuable life lessons. Oh, woe is me and my normal, healthy childhood.

Great read.
