I am not a fan of long books, I tend to think them overdrawn ( maybe my concentration is just too short), and at 930 pages Cryptonomicon is huge - and it is a fun fast read all the way through! The beginning is the heavier mathematically part, after that it´s all page turning fast, and a very fun read. Encryptation, World War 2, submarines and cables, and Bobby Shaftoe has gone straight to pretty near the top of my list of favorite characters ever. Really fun, as fast and thrilling as a thriller, but with some nice writing, and pretty offbeat ideas and scenes.

A few things bothered me about the book, the notorious Stephenson trade-marked rushed-out ending, the use of Nipponese all the time, some of Stephenson´s talk about UNIX was not truly convincing ( for example, if you really want to program an OS to do something, UNIX is lots easier to start learning than Windows, because a shell is lots more malleable, one can just start "inventing" commands. And please to delete do "rm -f" rather than just "rm", wonder what Randy´s shell definitions were ;) ), I got a few questions about some of the decryptation techniques, and more seriously there is still a bit to be explained about a few characters - I suppose it will all be made clearer in other books of this proposed trilogy. I will definetely be reading it.

About this book, it is a paperback, but pretty huge, so I would prefer to loan it just to local people, sorry.

A story that made reminded me, once again, how strange we geeks can appear to other people... Well written, but I prefered the story to the ending...

Who should I return it to?

Just a quick JE to say that it's here at my house, not to be read by me (I gave it a try a couple of years ago ... but was unable to finish it) .. but will be read by my husband one of these days ;-) Thanks for the loan, BlossomU...
