I loved this book. The main female characters were very convincing. I thought the history and social history of Afghanistan was interesting and after starting knowing sod all I came away with some knowledge.

The story is of Mariam and Laila, two women thrown together by circumstance who demonstrate in heart-rending fashion the triumph of the human spirit in the midst of the tragedy of Afghanistan since the 1970's.
I was just about in tears when I finished this book. In my view this will be seen as one of the outstanding books of the 21st century.

Well I thought this might be a bit of a 'worthy' read, but after my mum and dad praising it I pushed it to the top of my TBR pile. I enjoyed this very much too despite some of it being rather hard to read, Rasheed's mental and physical cruelty in particular. A very thought provoking and moving read, I'd thoroughly recommend this.
