Somewhat tedious (about 80 pages left) but a solid journalistic introduction to Boston's most famous mobster.

The Brothers Bulger: How They Terrorized and Corrupted Boston for a Quarter CenturyThe Brothers Bulger: How They Terrorized and Corrupted Boston for a Quarter Century by Howie Carr

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Howie Carr's classic account of both Bulger brothers. There's a bit of sensationalist journalism, but the text is definitely dense and informative, and riddled with side players, majors players, etc. The book might seem dated now that Whitey Bulger has been caught, but it remains an interesting read, and the reader gets to learn about the underworld of Boston and how that underworld infiltrated public life, both public service and law enforcement.

On a whim, I searched the listings at AbeBooks and eBay for the keywords "bookcrossing" or "BCID" or variants, and found several listings that included some reference to BC labels in the descriptions. (I don't mind seeing BC books in bookstores or for sale - that's part of a book's life cycle as far as I'm concerned. And in this case the BC info was preserved, so that's good too.) I decided to order a few of those books so I could re-release them, and this one arrived today. And to my surprise, it's one of haahaahaa98's!

Later: I knew bits and pieces of the Bulger story just by osmosis, hearing or reading news items as they popped up, but I'd never delved into their story in depth. This book revealed a lot of the (not surprisingly) sordid background, as well as the insidious influence they had.

Since the book came out while Whitey Bulger was still a fugitive, its "he's still missing" ending has lost a little punch; he was captured in 2011 after a very respectable period as a fugitive, and went to prison as an octogenarian - only to suffer an exceedingly brutal and grisly death at the hands of other mobsters...
