I've been enjoying the manga Black Butler (aka Kuroshitsuji) - not to mention the anime, of which I have Season 1 on DVD - and I picked up this volume on my latest trip to Barnes and Noble.

The series is set in a slightly alternate-reality Victorian London (cell phones, magic), and features the adventures of a 12-year-old boy trying to run his family business while catching criminals for the queen - all with the help of his demonic butler.

In this volume, the cover-art gag involves horse-racing; the inside front cover shows the cover-character (Sebastian in the role of a boarding-school house master) in jockey-gear, and at the end we see just how fast Sebastian can run!

This volume picks up from the events of Volume 14, in which Ciel is asked by the queen to find out what happened to her young kinsman, missing from his place at the exclusive school. Ciel is enrolled as a student, and Sebastian comes along as a replacement house master - and from the get-go it seems that this will be both troublesome (Ciel, NOT a "people person", having to learn the ins and outs of life as the new kid at a school full of obscure and tricky rules and traditions) and hilarious. The artwork is, as always, lovely, with the artist having some fun with different styles to suit the school setting, and the fish-out-of-water bits are indeed amusing. I laughed out loud when another student turns up - seems Prince Soma couldn't bear to be left out of the fun, and got himself admitted too, showing up on elephant-back for full effect!

The main focus of this volume is on a manipulative young student who's been abusing the already-questionable system of having junior boys effectively becoming servants to the senior ones; Ciel tricks him into revealing himself, but it's a close call at times. That settles one set of problems, but Ciel's no closer to learning what became of Derrick Arden, the queen's cousin...

[For more about the manga and the anime adaptation, see the TV Tropes page - but beware of spoilers! Also, note that the plot of the anime departs rather drastically from that of the manga, though that happens later in the series than this volume.]
