The second copy of this amazing book I've registered with BookCrossing, here also with notes from my first time reading this in 2006:

THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY by JEAN-DOMINIQUE BAUBY (2006)
Publisher: Harper Collins
ISBN: 978-0-00-779015-9

In December 1995, Jean-Dominique Bauby, editor-in-chief of French ‘Elle’ and the father of two young children, suffered a massive stroke and found himself paralysed and speechless, but entirely conscious, trapped by what doctors call ‘locked-in syndrome’. Using his only functioning muscle – his left eyelid – he began dictating this remarkable story, painstakingly spelling it out letter by letter.

The Diving-Bell and the Butterfly describes what Bauby’s life is like after suffering that massive stroke which left him with locked-in syndrome. The novel also details what his life was like before the stroke.

‘Locked-in syndrome: paralysed from head to toe, the patient, his mind intact, is imprisoned inside his own body, unable to speak or move. In my case, blinking my left eyelid is my only means of communication.’

The Diving-Bell and the Butterfly is a translation of the French memoir Le Scaphandre et le Papillon by journalist Jean-Dominique Bauby. Bauby’s book offers a haunting, harrowing look inside the cruel prison of locked-in syndrome, but it is also a triumph of the human spirit. An acclaimed 2007 film adaptation, directed by Julian Schnabel, won Best Director at Cannes and was nominated for the Palme d’Or.

Here’s a book the production of which genuinely deserves the appellation awesome. A fascinating read, poignant and hollows out your heart but is uplifting too.

Thank you very much for the lovely Halloween surprise! Couldn't resist and opened it one day early... *g* I've heard very good things about the movie that's based on this book, so I'm looking forward to reading it. It's good that it's a short read, because that's what I prefer at the moment, so perhaps the book doesn't have to wait too long on Mt TBR. *g*

A very interesting book giving us a glimpse of Bauby's thoughts and feelings after he suffers a stroke and ends up with Locked-In Syndrome. At times sad, then with some comments that make the reader chuckle it's an important book. You also get the sense that Bauby doesn't ever give up, though his situation and prognosis is dismal.
