No.1 LADIES' DETECTIVE AGENCY (No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series, bk 1) by ALEXANDER McCALL SMITH (1998)
ISBN: 0-349-1167-X / 9780349116754
Publisher: ABACUS FICTION (This edition pub 2003)
Cover: Wayward daughters. Missing husbands. Philandering partners. Curious conmen. If you’ve got a problem, and no one else can help you, then pay a visit to Precious Ramotswe, Botswana’s only – and finest – female private detective.
Her methods may not be Miss Marple, but she’s got warmth, wit and canny intuition on her side, not to mention Mr J.L.B. Matekoni, the charming proprietor of Tolkweng Road Speedy Motors. And Precious is going to need them all as she sets out on the trail of a missing child, a case that tumbles our heroine into a hotbed of strange situation and more than a little danger…
Delightfully different, THE No.1 LADIES' DETECTIVE AGENCY offers a captivating glimpse of an unusual world.
‘I was enchanted by Precious Ramotswe and the sly humour of Alexander McCall Smith’s writing’ ANTHONY MINGHULLA, Director of The English Patient
‘Forget the library - the body is in the mud hut’ SUNDAY THIMES
‘I haven’t read anything with such unalloyed pleasure for a long time’ SUNDAY TELEGRAPH
‘A rare pleasure’ DAILY TELEGRAPH
---------------------
The illustrations on this copy are bold lino-cut prints by Hannah Firmin. Not the original cover though one which McCall Smith, when I heard him talk in 2005, said he was particularly pleased with this artists work as the print style and colour gave a good feel for the country Botswana.

‘So many have been raving keenly about this Scottish author and I too have joined the throng’, the brief notes made when I registered my first copy of this, Sunday, April 04, 2004.

Ta-ra! I was out looking for a Scottish Ghost Stories or Witch Stories for some Halloween fun. None were forthcoming but this was found and as it’s the first of The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series of which I am also sending BookCrosser LynnGroman books two and three it seemed so meant I added this to the parcel.
So now registered on BookCrossing.com for LynnGormans Official BookCrossing Zone bookshelf, ‘The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency’ has started its travels from Edinburgh, Scotland - the home of the author Alexander McCall Smith!
