This is a rather a good yarn - very much in the vein of poseidon adventure but set in a very hi-tech office building. Lots of cliff hanger moments and some excellent thoughts on artificial intelligence. Loved it.

Wanting to offer this to my favourite English relative, I picked this up in December at the meeting mentioned above, and as it has no BC labels I planned, in passing, slapping on a couple, hoping to aid its travel passage. Today preparing to pass it on and after labelling it up, I discovered I’d not made a ‘caught’ JE for it – so apologies for that omission – that’s now rectified.

‘I loved Gridiron. It is a truly original disaster novel with a theme that is awesome’ RUTH RENDELL
‘Brilliant thriller about a computerised building that turns into a killing machine’ INDEPENDENT
‘Kerr paces the action, teases and controls as he chillingly describes the computer’s misuses of power…The novel is all the more powerful for being close enough to contemporary truth for this skilful writer it engender a real sense of horror…severely frightening’ FRANCES FYFIELD, Daily Telegraph
‘Ingeniously gruesome…I found myself turning the pages in feverish anticipation’ THE TIMES

A wee sked-daddle through this proves Frances Fyfield’s thoughts to be those I would most closely concur with. Tempted, after dipping in, to go down the ‘turning the pages in feverish anticipation’ route but I halted having promised myself I would stick to reading the books I have on hand and as post this asap as this is now pledged to scurry off to a Philip Kerr fan who is looking forward to it.

Received Wednesday 29th. This is one of the very, very few from this author that Mr Flutterbies9 has not read and he is really looking forward to this one. Appreciate the lovely unusual bookmark. Many thanks.

i cannot apologise enough how this book has slipped down TBR time and time again before we have finally both read this. I had not realised it was such a long time ago that we received this.

Mr Flutterbies9 actually read this early this year (apologies for not adding journal in timely manner) and immediately passed it on to me saying that it was fascinating and I ought to read it.

I have now completed this book and have to agree, it was indeed fascinating! and somewhat eery in places. I also agree with Free-Spirit2000 that there are many 'cliffhanger moments' throughout the book and 'some excellent thoughts on artificial intelligence' which do not seem to have aged (as yet). In fact, by three quarters the way through the book, I felt a little uncomfortable reading this in bed and had to read something else, lighter, before attempting to sleep!! The well thought out and ingenious misuses of the intelligence envisaged in the various methods the building uses to outplay its humanplayers was truly frightening and a testament indeed to this writer's skill in magnifying the unforeseen consequences of actions and their interactions.

Despite its horrific content, I did really enjoy this book and am sorry it is finished. I may even be encouraged to read more by this author who is a favourite of Mr Flutterbies9, although he has read most of his output now!

I do not have plans for this as yet (but suspect it may well go into a bookbox!) so will make it available for now.
