A book about a guy who witnesses a murder

I had really high hopes for this little book, but have to admit I found it something of a let-down. While I normally love a good bit of exposition, I found the way this novel went on about the minutiae of Professor Andersen's life tedious. Ironic, because I felt a similarity dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment, a novel in which I really enjoyed the level of detail, but considering how much more compact this tome is, I just felt like it slowed down the action of the story.

Putting this in the Only Time bookring. Hopefully someone else gets more out of it than I did.
Chosen from the Only Time bookring. Thank you!

Professor Andersen is an academic, whose whole view of himself is carefully constructed, and who masks his self doubts by being extra passionate about Ibsen. When on Christmas Eve, he witnesses a murder, he's unable to process something so alien and his worldview starts to disintegrate. I'm afraid I just didn't really get this book, not for me. Probably there are lots of clever Ibsen references which totally passed me by.
