About the Book
Three children wake up in a basement room of a large city hotel. They have been drugged and taken from their beds in the middle of the night. Now they are here. Alone.

Where are their parents? Who can they trust? The family has been betrayed to the government and Salt Cottage, their home on a cliff top above the ocean, is no longer safe. Their mother's scientific work has put them all in danger. To protect them, she must let them go. She must put her faith in an old family friend - and in her children's own resilience and courage.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

I've really enjoyed Nikki Gemmell's 3 previous novels, but this one for me was just a little too 'try hard' to be left of field for it to actually be enjoyable.
I get that this was a story based on religion vs science, but it took a stretch to assume a lot of the parts of the story that were purposely left blank for the reader to use their imagination to fill in those blanks.
Perhaps my imagination had checked out for the duration of reading this book, but on he whole I just didn't enjoy it.

Sent it on it's way to briz-cowgirl today as a Wishlist RABCK

I received The Book Of Rapture as a RABCK from J4shaw quite a while ago. Started reading it on the train to work, but then managed to pack it away somewhere too secret when we moved. I bought another copy in the meantime which is now travelling, but the original has now resurfaced, hooray!

Sadly, I didn't enjoy this book at much as Nikki Gemmell's previous works. It started off a bit exciting and I was intrigued as to where the story would go, but I just lost interest. The writing in the second person just annoyed me after a while, and I didn't care that much about the characters and their fate.
I did like the fact that the chapters were quite short, which was a blessing because I had to keep putting it down.
I have read that the reviews for this book are very mixed, and it has been in lists of 'books you can't put down'.
Anyway, hopefully someone will enjoy this book a bit more than I did!

Heading off across the country to lakelady2282 then...

Sorry just couldn't finish this. Abandoned at 104 pages. Just no progression of the storyline or at least not enough for this reader. The chapters are so short and I found the quotes cut the narrative off full stop rather than enhanced the preceding text. Will see if Gypsysmom wants it.

I love looking in the mailbox and finding a book-sized package there. Thanks lakelady2282 for sending it all the way from Australia and briz-cowgirl and J4shaw for thinking of sending it to me. Another one for the Australian Women Writers Reading Challenge.

I had read another book by Nikki Gemmell, Love Song, and I was very impressed with it. Gemmell is Australian although she now lives in England and my library only has two books written by her. Australian friends recommended this book and one sent it to me (thanks lakelady2282). Sadly I did not find it as good as Love Song although it is an interesting book.

In an unspecified country religious factions are battling for prominence. One family of the non-prominent faction try to hide away in the country. The mother and father are scientists who were involved with a secret project involving a weapon of mass destruction. Their location is discovered and the parents decide to protect their children by drugging them and sending them with a good friend. So the children wake up in a strange room with no idea where they are or how they got there. The mother is somehow able to see them and hear them. She writes down the story in Latin which eventually makes its way a Latin scholar in England.

The book consists of 152 chapters and none are more than 3 pages long. At the end of each chapter is a line from a religious text which the woman found underlined in books from her husband. All of these quotes extol love and compassion which is precisely the opposite that religious factions making war believe. How many more centuries must mankind make war before the lesson of these sayings is learned?
