Take a grief-stricken veterinary student and add a depression-era circus - mix in a dwarf, an elephant and a lovely equestrian - and you have Water for Elephants. This story is told in a retrospective manner - Jacob is ninety (or is it ninety-three?) and he's in an assisted living facility when the circus sets up a block down the street. This novel evokes the feel of the circus and their workers, both performers and the roustabouts. Jacob straddles the line as their almost-graduated veterinarian. I liked the bits with Jacob as an old man, looking back on his life and contrasting it with the frustrated man he is.
Quote to remember:
Age is a terrible thief. Just when you're getting the hang of life, it knocks your legs out from under you and stoops your back. It makes you ache and muddies your head and silently spreads cancer throughout your spouse.
