Following Atticus is Tom Ryan's moving true story, of a man and his remarkable dog.
Tom Ryan is a middle-aged, overweight, no-nonsense newspaper editor. But when Atticus M. Finch, a Miniature Schnauzer, arrives, he is forced to question everything about his life.
Wanting to raise money in memory of a friend who died of cancer, Tom decides that they will both climb 48 of New Hampshire's mountains during a single winter - twice.
What awaits the pair is the adventure of a lifetime.
In an enchanting but dangerous winter wonderland, they face raging blizzards, frostbite and storms. It is a rare test of endurance that soon becomes a soul-searching journey.
And then, within a month of returning home, tragedy strikes. Atticus goes blind, and the blood tests suggest something even worse. Now facing an even greater challenge, Tom and Atticus undertake a journey through darkness and into light.
For anyone that loved Marley and Me, Following Atticus by Tom Ryan is a heartwarming story of friendship, selflessness, redemption -- and above all, love.
Tom Ryan worked as an editor until 2007, when he decided to sell his newspaper move to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. He started climbing in memory of a friend who died of cancer, and in the last five years has climbed an incredible four hundred and fifty 4,000-foot peaks.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
To Norway, save trip!
Thank you for this book! It seems like an interesting story!
I've enjoyed reading this story about the adventures of a man and a dog. And how important a dog became in the life of the owner. It showes that one shouldn't judge people or animals by their appearence!
It was kind of interesting to read Tom's comment "I thought about getting [a dog] again someday. But not now. The time wasn't right.", as it appears to me when reading the story, that getting a dog was just what he needed. Same happened to James Bowen, when the cat Bob "adopted James as his owner". He wrote something like "the last thing I needed was a pet to take care of." But then, it turned out to be a really good thing that they found eachother!

Thanks so much for the wishlist book, and the lovely Christmas card!
Later: A charming little book, about a man who becomes obsessed with climbing New Hampshire's mountains - and finds the perfect companion in feisty little Atticus. (While the mountains of New Hampshire aren't very rugged by some standards - only the very top of Mt. Washington rises above the tree-line - the weather conditions and the dense forests can get people well and thoroughly lost, or worse; I was pleased to see the author comment on the risks, and on the choices he made to keep clear of the worst situations. I did worry a lot about the dog, but the team seemed to manage things pretty well!)
From the White Mountains to the author's time in Newburyport, Massachusetts, the book offers lots of local interest. But Atticus is the star!

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
I left this book, bagged against the elements, on a tree in the charming little walkway between W. Pearl and the Elm Street parking area, on this icy day. Not the best weather for an outdoor release, but the ice on the trees was quite lovely - and perhaps the sight of an unexpected book will cheer someone up. In any case, I hope the finder enjoys the book!
