A great read - brilliant concept, eccentric, satiric, entertaining. A terrible, controlling, Orwellian society with rigid social hierarchies - and lots of good laughs (Great Leap Backward, overemployment, spoons a rare comodity, apocryphal people, loopholery ...) I never thought dystopian fiction can be that hilarious. It builds up slowly, the reader has to find out how this weird world works, but then... no spoiler here.

Thank you so much for this. I love Jasper Fforde and I'm really looking forward to reading this book. It was a lovely surprise :)
This turned out to be a duplicate given to me at the uncon, so (in the interests of keeping my flight home in the air - not dropping like a stone under the weight of all the books!) I have unfortunately had to release this back to the book buffet. Thank you for the lovely thought :)

Picked up from the book buffet, along with all the book labels and stickers inside! Thank you ApoloniaX for bringing it to the Uncon and fleurdelys for putting it on the book buffet :-)

I was a little dubious about the premise and how it would translate into a full-length story set in a world that made sense. Jasper Fforde himself says in the acknowledgements that it "proved rather more difficult to get on to paper than I had anticipated", which doesn't surprise me at all. But he did well, and it turned out to be really fun, clever read.

Thanks again Apolonia and fleurdelys! I will save this for the Oxford Convention. (Yes, I've started collecting books for it already. Only seven months to go!)

When re-releasing this book please be aware that airports are not a good place to leave books unless they have a specific book exchange shelf or area, due to security problems, so they may well just be disposed of. Also charity shops may well discard books that have been labelled in any way and they mostly chose only the books in the very best condition
to place on their shelves and discard the rest-so another bad release option.

Everyone seemed to have read Shades of Grey, so I thought I might give it a try, if a colourful one ;-)

(Took the picture at Birmingham Museum)

Finished reading in Jan 2019, went to sleep too late on two nights because of it. Funny in an unfunny way.

Btw, Book #2, "Painting by numbers" is scheduled for 2020. By that time, I have probably forgotten the plot of the first one ....
